Thanks to Love Offering at Awakened World 2001, Tibetan monks will set-up a health care fund in their South India Monastery.
Synthesis participant, Ven. Achok Rinpoche, came all the way from Dharamsala to present at the Awakened World conference in Palm Springs. When we asked how we could help his people, he shared news of his monastery, Gaden Shartse Sockpa Khangtsen.
The monastery consists of 11 Khangtsen (Houses). His House is called Sockpa Khangtsen. 150 of around 190 monks have arrived from Tibet in the last few years, leaving their families and native land with their sole aim to study Buddhist Philosophy and modern science in India. The journey from Tibet is a most difficult one; the monks travel to the monastery mainly on foot through the mountains, in constant fear of being caught. They have nothing with them to start their new life, requiring only the most basic needs, and the education to which they have a passionate commitment.
A major problem for the monks is health care. Exhausted from their journey, and due to the foreign climate and sudden change in altitude and diet, the monks often get sick. Because they are not properly taken care in the beginning, health problems become serious and often require hospitalization. Almost all the new monks require medical care and treatment, for which costs are high and they have no funds.
The Khangtsen Management takes care of the monks' basic needs by way of clothing, food, shelter and education, but the quality of life and facilitation of their primary goal: education, will be transformed by continuing support for health care.
